How many decibels does it take to FEEL vibrations caused by a car stereo 500 ft. away?
Everyday, 2-3x/day, I brace myself for our neighborhood’s "car stereo audiophile". The BOOM-BA-BA-BOOM-BOOM is audible 1/4 mile away as he approaches my house! The distance between the road and my house is about 500 feet. The most interior area of my house is about 1,000 feet from the road. I can feel the sound/noise vibrations through the carpet, furniture, walls and even on my laptop keyboard! All my doors and windows are closed. When he passes by VERY late at night, the sound travels through my pillow and attacks my head. It feels like a jack-hammer. UGH. Not good vibrations. I’ve been around a lot of noise caused by F-14 take-offs/landings on an aircraft carrier and the jolt of afterburners. How does this dude’s decibel level compare? I also wonder how long it will take before he goes totally deaf because each week the volumn gets pumped up more. Hope my windows don’t crack!

A jet engine is around 120db from 25 meters away, sorry i don’t know conversion for miles. I used to have a car stereo for competition and it would produce 152.4db if thats any help. The bass can travel easily the distance you are talking about. Permanent hearing loss starts at 90db so its most likely even with hearing protection he will still go deaf as he practically is sitting in a speaker box. As for the volume going up its probably because he is already going deaf so has to turn it up, and on cold days when the air is more dense it will actually be up to an extra 3db louder, and also depending on wind direction. Does this help?, in aus you can be fined for excessive car stereo noise! and even have your car confiscated!
I would guess about 60 decibels which is against a lot of sound ordinance violations! Check into your local ordinances and see if that will spare you any peace. Also, when a jet takes off the sound is more dispersed, going in different directions. A speaker is a more targeted sound because it is being forced in the same direction. By the way, this is an educated guess and in no way is guaranteed correct.
