Why does it hurt lifting my head from the pillow? I've been having neck pain that expands to shoulder (2 weeks
So far, pain relievers don’t help much. Ice packs help reduce the neck pain but not lifting the head from the pillow while lying down on my back or sideways.

Your symptoms sound like a subluxated cervical vertabrae.
This type of misalignment can occur as the result of a sports related injury, minor auto accident, or any incident where the neck is jarred with great force. Or, as the result of long-term repetative motion. For example, sitting for many hours at a computer – where your head and neck are slightly bent forward frequently and for long periods of time.
If one (or more) of the upper vertabrae are out of alignment, great additional strain is put on the neck muscles. Heat/cold and topical pain relievers will help to dull the pain in the muscles, but the inherent strain on those muscles won’t be alleviated until the vertabrae is re-aligned.
It may be time to find a good chiropractor.
F.Y.I. cervical re-alignment is rarely painful. And, if you suffer from allergies or a susceptability to sinus, ear, nose, or throat infections, re-alignment of the subluxated vertebrae can greatly reduce the occurrence of aforementioned ailments.
Hope you feel better soon!
You might have hyperextended the muscle. Try heat on it since it has been way more than 24 hours since the injury. When you put heat on it make sure you are sitting up. While the heat is on, try gently stretching your neck. Ice prevents swelling by vasodilation (it constricts the blood vessels). Heat allows the blood to flow more to the area causing the muscles to loosen up.
Go and get an x-ray done to make sure you are not developing arthritis or are having disc problems, If nothing shows then a CT and or MRI can exclude anything else. If nothing shows up well then it is definitely soft tissue damage and seeing a physiotherapist can help you and give you techniques to alleviate this problem.
