Are 2 pillows or 1 pillow better for your neck?
I have had a stiff neck for about a month. I am going through a stressful period right now. I thought the stiffness is because of that.
Now I started using two pillows instead of one. My neck feels a little bit better.
In your experience, are 2 pillows better or worse for your neck?
Also what did you do if you ever had a stifff neck? Thanks

Thick = 1
Thin = 2
As you can see there is a space between your neck and your shoulders so when you lie down you need something to support your neck so it’s straight… blah blah blah
But if you have too many/too little pillows your neck tilts to 1 side a little to much… it’s bad for your back, neck and spine.
If you/I have a sore neck, do some neck stretches for a couple of days and if that doesn’t work go see a doc.
Two pillows are go0d for me.. Dependin if they are soft + firm :}
I use three pillows and I feel fine. But, then agian, that’s just me.
To be honest, I really think it just depends on the thickness of the pillows, how long your neck is, and what you are comfortable with. Two pillows is too much for me, but one isn’t enough…so if two pillows works for you that’s great. When i have a stiff neck i stretch it…but now that i think about it i’m not sure that’s the best course of action….slightly pointless answer..
I had a stiff neck for a couple of months and I used to sleep on two pillows. Get a neck roll or roll up one pillow and put it under your neck, which levels out your body. Don’t sleep on two pillows. For the stiff neck and pain I took some advil and warmed up my neck with a moist warm towel and started light neck excersises, like rolling my head around and from one side to the other. It was painful.
Personally i like two pillows or one folded in half, keeps my head level. Make sure you are well hydrated as dehydration can cause headaches which leads to tension in the neck. Use arnica oil to rub on sore neck, it can work wonders. THere is also a liniment that is made with chili peppers that can heat up and relax muscles, but be careful it can really burn the crap out of you if you use too much.
my neck is used to one pillow so my neck stars to pain when i use two pillows. if your neck feels better with two pillows than continue to use it. it basically depends on what your used to. a single hard cotton pillow is good for stiff necks or at least it works on me.this is my experience i hope its of some use to you.
One, or none, is always better than two.
Hmm, well I sleep on my stomach so I don’t really use a pillow.
It’s really whatever is most comfortable for you, everyone is different.
Your neck stiffness may be from grinding your teeth at night. Especially since you’re saying you’re going through some stressful times. Look in the oral care isle and find a dental plate (not sure what its called) wear it at night for awhile and see if that helps you at all. If it does you know you grind your teeth, the dentist can make you one that is much more comfortable to wear.
I was told by a physical therapist that you want your neck to be straight when you are laying flat on your back or on your side. In other words, you want to keep the spine in line. So if one pillow does the trick , then that is all you need. If it takes two, then use two.
For a stiff neck you can try either heator cold or both, massage, topical anesthetic creams, manipulation, topical pain patches, and motrin/naprosyn. Also try and reduce the stress levels. You want to stand up straight and keep your head balanced over your shoulders. That will also help. Examine the way you are laying in bed, that may be contributing to your neck pain. Are you doing any new activities at work or exercise? Do some light stretching during the day ( shoulder rolls, head rolls, ect) to help loosen up the muscles.
On the other hand if your neck pain is due to physical anomilies (calcifications, degenerative disk disease, ect) then you will need more than two pillows to help you take care of your pain.
If your neck has been stiff for a month you probably need to see a chiropractor because something has slipped out. 1 visit should do it. I believe the mechanically ideal position for the neck is straight when you sleep on your side, so stack your pillows accordingly. Too much pillow height is just asking things to pop out.
You can also look at Mckenzie Therapy which includes self treatment of both neck and back exercises by stretching and twisting. This will not pop a misaligned vetrabrae back into place if it is way out of position but will solve most minor complaints. I bought the illustrated Mckenzie therapy books but they may have a website as well.
Anti inflammatory drugs(aspirin, advil, not tylenol)will provide temporary relief.
Two pillows do the work for my dad.
I never used a pillow before.but when I have a stifff neck my mother pushes two pillows under my neck so that it would get better in a shorter time. i think two pillows will be soft and comfortable.and you can feel better very early if you have a stifff neck.
well be careful from next time so that you wont get any stifff neck again
take care.
