Is Thailand relatively safe to travel to?
Anybody who has been to Thailand, how safe did you feel while you were there? Any problems? I’m an average sized guy planning on traveling by myself to see the sites and visit an old friend. Should I bring my hunting knife and sleep with it under my pillow?

While no one can gurantee you won’t be a victim of crime, Thailand is quite safe.
use your common sense and be alert.
don’t accept food and drink from strangers.
don’t flash around money and expensive jewlery and camera gear etc.
When you go out wth your old friend, take his advice and do as he says.
"hunting knife and sleep with it"? – yes…if you are staying in a budget back packer hotel. I found that a lot of theft are made NOT by locals but by other foreing backpackers.
Do more reasearch and ask more questions on here. You will find practical tips and safety info and some cultural advice very helpful.

i just went to koh somui few weeks ago.
very safe, but i think it was because i was in a resort.
people very friendly, and always give service with a smile.
so smile and make sure you don’t touch a woman without their permission.

Thailand is very safe to travel to. The last thing I thought about bringing was a knife. People there are nice and probably aren’t much bigger then you anyhow.

The thing you have to worry about the most in Thailand is having a good time
The greatest risks in Thailand are (a) driving a motorbike, and (b) a small chance of petty theft in some areas.
I live there about half the year & I’ve never had any problems with the locals anywhere (you’re more likely to have an issue with a foreigner!). If you’re in a big city like Bangkok, much like any other big city, there are areas to avoid & some unsavory people about.
The Thai people are generally very friendly and gracious…so enjoy your trip!

Well Walter, if you try to go through security checks with a knife you won’t end up in Thailand it will be a jail instead! Why would you sleep with a knife under your pillow – won’t the doors have locks on your hotel or did you intend to sleep in the open somewhere? Do you sleep with knives under your pillow back in your own country when you are in a hotel? If you are afraid someone is going to come in your hotel room just pop a chair up against the door knob or make sure the ladyboy you rent for the night is a little skinny guy!
Thailand will probably be safer than many places in your own country. You do have to take normal precautions like not bring any valuables with you that you would worry about if they became "lost" some how. Tourists steal from other tourists too not just locals! On buses, trains, even planes don’t put valuables in your checked in bag. Even on a plane I keep the bag in the overhead locked. In your hotel use the security box for valuables and keep your bag locked. You are more likely to have something stolen by a guest you bring into your room than by the hotel staff!
Google up scams, dangers, precautions for Thailand and you will get lots of info. If you are stupid and wander around waving money around some tourist might take it from you! Bangkok has political problems but none of the action has been against tourists only against themselves and the government. Just keep away from any areas where protests might take place and you won’t be affected.

I can’t say it’s any safer than other big cities. Hey, I am a Thai working on Washington DC. I feel safer walking in Bangkok at night than walking at night in DC. My co-worker got attacked by a homeless near the Capital Hill in broad day light.
I don’t understand why Americans like to think of other none white counties as unsafe? Seriously, do you ask this question when you go to Europe?

You will only need your knife if you are doing a Rambo and thinking of sneaking into Burma ( Not advisable ! ).
Thailand is as safe as UK as far as I am concerned.
