What is the function of a neck roll pillow? Do people use it in place of the regular pillow to sleep?

The function of a neck roll pillow is not that of a replacement for a regular pillow; it’s to stop your head from falling back when sleeping while travelling.
My parents use them to support their necks when they sleep. I don’t really know if it helps but they say it makes them sleep better.
